How to bleed radiators?

From time to time you may find that your radiators need to be bleed. There can be many reason for this, they include…

  • To remove any trapped air in your heating system which can stop the hot water from circulating through the radiator effectively. A sign of trapped air is where the top of the radiator stays cold in comparison to the bottom of the radiator.

  • To improve efficiency which in turns means that you use less energy to heat your home/commercial premise and receive a lower heating bill.

  • To prevent strain on your heating system which can help to extend the life of your boiler.

  • To silence any noises that you might hear from your radiators and heating system. These are typical gurgling, banging or tapping noises – the irritating kinds of sounds when you are trying to sleep.

If you are looking to bleed your radiators there are some simple steps to take – check out our step by step guide below.

However, if you are unsure you are always best to get in touch with a Gas Safe Registered plumbing and heating engineer like us, Knight Gas Services, so you can be assured that all is well.

How to bleed your radiators (UK edition)

Step 1: Turn off your heating and let it cool – you are looking for cold radiators and pipes. This could take a while depending on the size and age of your heating system.

Step 2: Place a cloth and container under the top valve on your radiator. We advise a plastic container with fairly high sides, especially for larger radiators.

Step 3: Use a radiator key (available from most hardware stores) in the top valve of your radiator to turn it anti clockwise until air hisses.

Step 4: Allow the air to hiss out of the radiator, waiting for when water flows steadily. Once water is flowing steadily you can close the top valve of your radiator using your radiator key (turn it clockwise).

Step 5: Check and repressurise your boiler as needed.

As mentioned above, if you are unsure you are always best to get in touch with a Gas Safe Registered plumbing and heating engineer like us, Knight Gas Services. We can carry out checks of your radiators and bleed them as necessary for your peace of mind.
